Highlights of 48 Hours in Lisbon

It's true with a bit of planning ahead you really can pack so much into a weekend. It's great to have the opportunity to see the world even if you have a full time job. My two best friends and I jetted off to Lisbon to get a break from frost and dark mornings of Scotland. Lisbon has really increased in popularity in the last few years, and I can see why! (Also helps the ever growing list of cheap flights from the UK, you can check out the best ones here). Lisbon as a city has some incredible history, culture and art scene to discover. Lisbon isn't too pricey either and has lots of options for day trips too, which makes it perfect for a cheap short city break with friends or solo! Below I have listed some of my favourite highlights of my short trip to Lisbon, as always feel free to comment or message me directly if you have any questions or need any more recommendations.

Awesome Restaurants and Rooftop Bars

Lisbon has some really great foodie spots, local authentic cuisine with affordable wine, street food to Michelin star restaurants, here are a few of my recommendations:

The Food Temple

If you love excellent food with a hippie vibe (and jugs of wine for 8 euros) this is the place for you.

There are 3 tapas and 1 main dish on the menu which changes daily - all vegan. The night we went, we had oknomiyaki, kale and mushroom salad, red bean dip with tortilla chips and a butternut squash chilli. Friendly and chatty staff, and great music to go with your meal.

Only thing is, it is quite hard to find but if you put in the actual address rather than "Food Temple" you will be able to find it, down a cute cobbled alley way (where most of the best food places tend to be!)

Topo

On the other end of the spectrum, Topo is a newly opened roof top bar with a live DJ most nights. Fancy cocktails (not too expensive) and a view of the castle! There are a couple of vegetarian options on the menu too. Prepare for it being on the edge of being too trendy inside and therefore limited lighting to actually see your food.

Lost In

If you still want a roof top bar with a view of the castle but with more casual vibes - Lost In has a beautiful little beer garden, equipped with lots of fairy lights, cushions and blankets.

Cafe Pois

Is it bad we went to Cafe Pois twice? The sandwiches were just too good! Surroundings were cosy sofas, lots of nooks, beautifully decorated window seats and lots of books to chose from too! The "Klimt" bagel was our favourite.

Custard Tarts

These custard beauties will be everywhere you go so stock up while you can!

You can get these custard tarts in most coffee spots and local bakeries for just 50 cents. If you want a nice ambiance and good quality coffee to accompany your custard tart head to Fabrica Coffee Roasters just off the main square of the city.

Street Art

Lisbon has a lot of really impressive street art, coloured houses and beautiful tiles around every corner. There is a great hub of street art as you go towards the castle. It is worth checking out even if you aren't planning on going into the castle you can get pretty high up the hill before you have to pay entry.

Ginjinha

A traditional Portuguese liquour called ginjinha is served in "Postage stamp" sized bars all along São João da Praça. It is cherry flavoured in a chocolate cup for 1 Euro. Try to find the ones down alleyways so you can sit with the locals and soak up the authenticity.

Highly recommend the wonderful city of Lisbon, Eurovision 2018 is lucky to have you haha! Get ready to work your calves in this hilly city, eat lots of custard tarts and admire the artistic vibes.

Hope you enjoyed reading my highlights and I hope you get a chance to visit Lisbon soon.

As always, thanks for reading x
